The second and final Toys For Tots fieldtrip was a great success, fun was had by all and UT was well represented by the hardworking students and staff. UT purchased $1,557.00 worth of toys at Farm and Fleet and the store manager Ron Fritz donated and additional $500 and UT directly collected $400 worth of toys, bringing UT’s total donation to an awesome $2,457 check out the receipt in the General Office. The photo in Friday’s paper featured four UT students, three of which were seniors who participated in the evening fieldtrips three of the four years while at UT. Special thanks goes out to all those who donated toys or money and the hardworking chaperones who worked shoulder to shoulder with the students, they included: Anita Fagerlind, Sherri Harding, DeAnn Puebla, Dale Lacina, Tina Dunker, Barb Montgomery, Rose Hernandez and Janet Belha

New Sign in Honor of Corey Arvanis, class of 1989

November 9, 2011 by

On Thursday, November 3, United Township High School dedicated a new scrolling display sign in honor of Corey Arvanis, class of 1989.  Mr. Arvanis passed away soon after he completed his freshman year at Northern Illinois University as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

The new sign was made possible with a generous donation by Corey’s mother, Pam Rothbart.  For the past twenty years a scholarship has been awarded to a deserving UTHS graduate in honor of Corey.

Mrs. Rothbart, in cooperation with UTHS, decided to consolidate the remaining money in the scholarship fund for a larger memorial project.  In brainstorming projects, the idea of a sign surfaced as a need for the school.

UTHS Principal Carl Johnson stated “this is great example of a UTHS family giving back to benefit the students and parents,” adding further “that this is a tremendous visual addition to our school as well as an important communication tool for our community.”

Mrs. Rothbart stated “while Corey’s death was a tragedy, this gift is a celebration of his life and a lasting gift to the students of UTHS and the community in his memory.”

The United Township community greatly appreciates the generosity of Mrs. Rothbart and Family.

Help our hungry citizens be fed through this upcoming holiday season and cold weather. The UTHS Student Council is hosting the 7th Annual “Fill the Big Yellow Bus” event on Sunday, November 6, 2011, from 1-3 p.m.  Students, faculty and staff will be riding busses to Silvis, East Moline, Hampton, Colona, and Carbon Cliff communities to collect the Student Hunger Drive grocery bags filled with food.  Feel free to put the bags on the porches to be collected.  We are encouraging no perishable items, clothing, pet food, bulk items or soda.  Please contact Bob Feller or Kathleen Davies, Student Council Advisors at 752-1696 for questions.  Please call the UTHS Bus Garage to make sure missed bags get picked up, 752-1682.

Skate City in East Moline is having an all-skate on Thursday, October 27th. The Student Council encourages Junior High School and Grade School students to participate in this worth-while activity.  Two cans of food to enter (must purchase skate rental).

UTHS is also teaming up with the Silvis HyVee with “Buck for Hunger” where you have the opportunity to add a dollar to your grocery total. The extra dollar added to your bill goes toward helping the UTHS Student Hunger Drive.  We are buying food for the drive that ultimately goes to the hungry people in OUR area of the Quad Cities. “Buck for Hunger” dates are Thursday, October 27th to Sunday, October 30th.

It is the 26th Anniversary of the Student Hunger Drive and UTHS wants to make it the best year ever.  We are looking to beat our 125,000 lbs. of food collected last year, please help us make this goal possible!  Thank you for all of your support in feeding the hungry.

New UTHS Remote Access for Staff and Students

August 26, 2011 by

UTHS now has a new remote access option for staff and students to use while working on documents away from school. This access replaces the CITRIX home access we have had in place for some time and will require some work on your home PC or laptop to install and get started.

This access and these directions should only be used at home and not at school.

To begin using the new remote access, it is probably a good idea to uninstall the Citrix Program Neighborhood program off of your computer at home first. This was the program used to connect using the old method.

After uninstalling Citrix and restarting your machine, open your browser to the address https://remote.uths.net

This will take you to a page and will request that you install a program.

Be agreeable and after the install you should be able to log in using your school network credentials.

After logging in, you will have a page that will show a monitor and it will say “UTHS Lab” above it.

Click on the monitor and another window will open and a windows 7 machine should startup. When you are done with the machine, please do a shutdown of the machine.

You will be asked if this machine can have access to your machine. That is for you to decide. This would allow you to transfer files between here and school real easy if you do give it read/write access.

You will also be asked to if you want to “enter a url”. Please say “yes” to this and when the next window opens, enter the word “apps” without the quotes and hit update.

This allows you to have access to office 2010 on the device. Students and staff should also do this in the writing lab as well.

Things could possibly be slow in the evening if we have not correctly anticipated the number of users, so we will slowly be tweaking the system until we see how many users we have on at night.

INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL COLLEGE ATHLETES

August 11, 2011 by

If you are thinking about playing a sport in college, talk to your counselor and to your coach about your intentions. This is your responsibility. Don’t wait.

BASIC ELIGIBILTY GUIDELINES FOR THE NCAA, NAIA, AND NJCAA

NCAA- (over 1,000 member colleges) – Division I and Division II colleges can offer athletic scholarships; Division III colleges (mostly smaller, private colleges) cannot.  Division III athletes do not need to meet NCAA academic requirements.

Athletes going to Division I and II colleges must have a minimum GPA in a specified number of core courses. They must also have the required ACT or SAT score. ACT/SAT requirements for Division I eligibility are based on a sliding scale. The higher a student’s core GPA, the lower the test score required.  Athletes should take the ACT and/or the SAT in the spring of their junior year.

To initiate the eligibility process, athletes need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This should be done at the beginning of an athlete’s junior year. For additional information, go to https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter.

NAIA (over 300 member colleges)-NAIA colleges can award full or partial scholarships. To play a sport or receive an athletic scholarship, an athlete must meet two of the following three NAIA requirements: 1) have the required ACT or SAT score; 2) have an overall GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; 3) graduate in the top half of his/her class. For more information, go to http://naia.cstv.com

NJCAA (over 500 member colleges) – Division I and Division II junior colleges can offer scholarships, Division III colleges cannot.  There are no academic eligibility requirements for athletes entering junior colleges. For additional information, go to www.njcaa.org.
