Panthers Streak Past Silver Streaks

The Girls Panther Swim Team traveled to Galesburg last night and streaked past the Silver Streaks 108.5-74.5.  The Panthers were dominant in winning all 12 events to improve their record to 4-1.  Winners for the Panthers were:  Abby Jansen (200 Free-2:03.52, 100 Free-57.16), Kendra Diamond (200 IM-2:24.82, 500 Free-5:41.53), Brandi LaFountaine (50 Free-26.87, 100 Back-1:01.88), Caitlin Dassow (100 Fly-1:05.04, 100 Breast-1:18.69), Grace Timler (Diving-146.70), 200 Medley Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Brittni LaFountaine, Dassow, Diamond-2:02.60), 200 Free Relay (Brittni LaFountaine, Kaisa Sommer, Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-1:49.59), and the 400 Free Relay (Diamond, Sommer, Dassow, Jansen-4:03.13).  “While it was not a good meet time wise for us, the girls did battle even though we were struggling.  Swimming here was good for us as the Conference meet will be here in November.  Our divers dove pretty good as well as Ali Ogden having a good meet for us.  We really need to keep working hard as the 2nd half of our races are suffering a little.”

The JV team, while swimming regular events for the first time this year, came up on the short end of a 89-50 score.  The loss dropped the JV Panthers to 2-2 on the year.  Winners for the Panthers were:  Hannah Shoppa (100 IM, 50 Fly), and Alexa Swanson (100 Back).  “It was a learning experience as some of the girls swam regular length events for the first time.  As they get more meets under them they will be more comfortable with their races.”

Panthers Ground Bombers

The Panther Girls Swim Team travelled to Macomb and grounded the Bombers by a score of 98-62.  The Panthers, winners in 9 out of 11 events, improved their record to 3-1.  Leading the way with wins for the Panthers were:  Brandi LaFountaine (200 IM-2:25.11, 100 Free-57.16), Abby Jansen (100 Fly-1:03.49), Alejandra Olvera (500 Free-6:50.15), Kendra Diamond (100 Back-1:07.22), Caitlin Dassow (100 Breast-1:16.92), 200 Medley Relay (Diamond, Dassow, Jansen, Ali Ogden-2:05.76), 200 Free Relay (Dassow, Kaisa Sommer, Ogden, Brandi LaFountaine-1:51.97), and the 400 Free Relay (Jansen, Olvera, Brittni LaFountaine, Diamond-4:09.59).  “I thought we did a very good job.  It was a long trip, but I though we swam better than Saturday.  We got some kids in different events and got some kids in the varsity lineup as it was a varsity meet only.  Our better kids are getting in shape and we starting to be a little more consistent.  We still are working hard on the second half of our races.”

Panthers 6th at Iron Invite

In one of the toughest invites the Panthers will travel to, the Panthers finished 6th in the 7 team Iron Invitational at Normal Community High School.  The Panthers tallied 264 points trailing 1st place Normal Community with 337 points.  Leading the way with top six finishes for the Panthers were:  Abby Jansen (200 Free-2:03.72-3rd), 100 Back-1:01.69-4th), Caitlin Dassow (200 IM-2:22.72-4th, 100 Fly-1:03.71-5th), Brandi LaFountaine (50 Free-26.70-4th, 100 Back-1:01.46-3rd), 200 Medley Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Brittni LaFountaine, Dassow, Jansen-1:59.01-4th), 200 Free Relay (Brittni LaFountaine, Alejandra Olvera, Kaisa Sommer, Kendra Diamond-1:55.96-5th), and the 400 Free Relay (Dassow, Diamond, Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-3:57.15-4th).  “We were a little flat but that was expected as we had a really good meet and tough meet against Rock Island on Thursday.  We really hit the weight room hard on Friday morning which hurt our performances a little.  We will learn from this meet and move on.  We had some good moments in our races but were just not bringing them home.”

The Freshman/Sophomore part of the meet found the Panthers in 6th place out of 7 teams with a score of 114 points.  Top six finishes were swam by Mia Franks (100 Free-1:10.05-6th), and the 200 Medley Relay (Natalie Davis, Ali Ogden, Franks, Paige Tygart-2:23.25-6th).  “We did not bring a lot of kids as they are not ready for full event races yet, but the girls we did bring did a good job away from home and in their first big invite.”

Next meet at Macomb     Tuesday-September 20, 2016     5:00 pm

Panthers Nipped By Rocks

The UTHS Panthers were in a shootout with the Rock Island Rocks at the UTHS Swim Pool, with the Rocks nipping the Panthers in the end by a score of 94-91.  The Panthers won a whopping 9 out of 12 events, but could not quite overcome the Rock’s depth as they lost for the first time this season.  The now 2-1 Panthers were led by winners:  Brandi LaFountaine (50 Free-25.63, 100 Back-59.93), Abby Jansen (200 IM-2:20.77, 100 Free-56.10), Caitlin Dassow (200 Free-2:04.59, 100 Fly-1:02.77), Kendra Diamond (500 Free-5:36.41), 200 Medley Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Brittni LaFountaine, Dassow, Jansen-1:57.45), and the 400 Free Relay (Dassow, Diamond, Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-3:50.24).  “We really swam a good meet.  I knew we had to win a lot events to stay with them and we did.  We just came up a couple of places short.  Rock Island has a good team with kids that can swam a lot of different events so I knew it would be tough to beat them.  It was a fun meet for our girls and that is what I tried to emphasize to the girls Wednesday and Thursday.  Brandi really had a great meet for us, as well as Abby, Kendra, and Caitlin getting in better shape and getting their times back down.  Alejandra, Alison, Brittni, Natalie, and Kaisa were also really good for us in picking up points.”

The JV team also suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 86-54.  The young Panthers did win 3 events.  Winners for the Panthers were:  Becky Phillips, Cinthya Becerril, Grace Timler, Paige Tygart, Autumn Dillin, Jaylie Marberry, Hannah Shoppa, and Evita Fazliu.  “We swam better than last meet and that is what we are looking forward to each meet.  These girls just need more time and exposure to swim meets.”

Panthers 4th at Rock Island Relays

The UTHS Girls Swim Team finished in a nice fourth place finish at the Rock Island Relays.  The Panthers garnered 154 points to 1st place Dunlap-231, 2nd place Pleasant Valley-204, and 3rd place Rock Island-165.  In an all relay meet format the Panthers swam to 6 third place finishes in the 12 event meet.  Top six finishers for the Panthers were:  200 Medley Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Brittni LaFountaine, Caitlin Dassow, Abby Jansen-3rd-1:58.30), 2×200 Free Relay (Kaisa Sommer, Ali Ogden-5th-4:41.96), 2×200 IM Relay (Dassow, Kendra Diamond-3rd-4:47.07), 2×50 Free Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-3rd-52.06), 2×100 Fly Relay (Dassow, Diamond-3rd-2:11.09), Crescendo 500 Free Relay (Natalie Davis, Alejandra Olvera, Ogden, Sommer-6th-5:38.23), 2×100 Back Relay (Jansen, Brandi LaFountaine-3rd-2:02.13), 2×100 Breast Relay (Brittni LaFountaine, Ogden-4th-2:42.59), and the 400 Free Relay (Dassow, Diamond, Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-3rd-3;56.45).  “It was a good meet for us performance wise.  This type of meet is not great for our team at this time as we are really short on depth and you need it for this meet.  It will take some patience as our depth will develop over the course of the year.  We could not enter our divers as one of them had the ACT test so that hurt our scoring a little.  But, we finished were I thought we would.  Diamond, Olvera, Davis, Sommer, and Ogden were real good today.”

Panthers Cage Falcons

The UTHS Girls Swim Team caged the Davenport West Falcons 107-71 at the West High School Swim Pool.  The Panthers won 10 out of 12 events to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.  Leading the way with wins for the Panthers were:  Grace Timler (Diving-1:55.00), Caitlin Dassow (200 IM-2:22.52, 100 Fly-1:03.04), Abby Jansen (50 Free-26.13, 100 Free-56.89), Kendra Diamond (500 Free-5:43.99), Brandi LaFountaine (100 Back-1:03.87), Brittni LaFountaine (100 Breast-1:20.17), and the 200 Free Relay (Brandi LaFountaine, Dassow, Diamond, Jansen-1:47.07), and the 400 Free Relay (Dassow, Diamond, Brandi LaFountaine, Jansen-3:57.84).  “We were a little bit up and down in times.  But, this was our first away meet and the girls have to get used to swimming in other pools.  We also need to get better in our fourth events because that is what we will be swimming in most of our meets.  I thought Dassow, Timler, Olvera, and Brittni LaFountaine were good today, and Diamond was much better in her swim.  Becky Phillips, Natalie Davis, Mia Franks, Hannah Shoppa, and Alexa Swanson also got us valuable points.”

The JV team also improved their record to 2-0 as they got by Davenport West 54-51.  Winners for the young Panthers were:  Alexa Swanson (50 Free), 100 Medley Relay (Cinthya Becerril, Grace TImler, Paige Tygart, Autumn Dillin), 100 Free Relay (Becky Phillips, Timler, Dillin, Alexis Friend), and the 200 Free Relay (Tygart, Phillips, Becerril, Swanson).  “It was a tough meet that we were fortunate to win.  We were not real sharp but that is due to being our first away meet and the girls have never swam in another pool besides ours.  Becky Phillips and Autumn Dillin had good days for us.”
