Have you ever heard of Dunbar’s Number Theory? This theory states that humans can successfully maintain 150 stable relationships on average. Anthropologist Robin Dunbar studied the relationship between brain size and group size in primates. He used neuroimaging and observed the time spent on grooming by the primates, which is an important social behavior. From this, he concluded that the size of the part of the brain limits the size of the social group. From his study of primates and the comparison of the average human brain size, Dunbar proposed the number of 150. Whether or not you agree with this theory, it should make you think about the number of friends you have versus the number of meaningful relationships you have. Dunbar’s Number Theory should make us consider the idea of quality over quantity and can help us focus on building deeper connections with a smaller group of people. Be sure to turn your attention to the TV monitors for the H.O.P.E. Club’s Mindful Monday highlight featuring a visual of Dunbar’s Number Theory with a brief description.
